Masters of the Forest Canopy
White-handed gibbons are perfectly adapted to spending most of their lives high above the ground. Their unusually long arms and powerful muscles allow them to travel through the treetops with ease. They move from branch to branch using a remarkable form of locomotion known as brachiation, swinging smoothly through the canopy with their arms.
Sometimes, these gibbons simply suspend themselves from a branch with their arms stretched out, appearing completely relaxed as they rest in their treetop surroundings.
What Do White-Handed Gibbons Eat?
Fruit makes up most of the white-handed gibbon's diet, but these primates are not limited to one type of food. They also consume berries, flowers, leaves, young shoots, and insects. On occasion, they may even eat a bird's egg when the opportunity arises.
Conservation Challenges
Despite their impressive adaptations and wide distribution, white-handed gibbons are classified as Endangered. The continued loss of tropical forest remains an important threat, as deforestation reduces the habitat these tree-dwelling primates depend on.
However, hunting has become an even more serious concern. White-handed gibbons are targeted both as a source of meat and for the illegal wildlife trade, where young animals may be captured and sold as pets. These pressures continue to place wild populations at risk.
