From perfectly straight structures extending across deep blue waters to fragile-looking walkways suspended above dramatic gorges, and from solid concrete spans rising through rolling landscapes to intricate urban designs, bridges around the world take countless forms. Their purpose can be interpreted in different ways depending on the observer. Some people admire them for their practicality, others for their engineering and architectural achievement, while many simply appreciate their visual beauty.

Even the way people perceive bridges can be influenced by language and culture. In a 2018 TED Talk about the importance of language, cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky explained that the concept of a bridge carries different associations in different languages. She noted that the word for “bridge” is grammatically feminine in German but masculine in Spanish. German speakers are therefore more likely to describe bridges using words associated with beauty, elegance, and traditionally feminine qualities, while Spanish speakers are more inclined to describe them as strong or long.

Regardless of language or perspective, many bridges around the world are remarkable examples of human design and engineering. From elaborate, cage-like structures in Dubai to seemingly precarious footbridges hanging above dramatic ravines in Madagascar, these structures demonstrate just how varied bridges can be.

Øresund Bridge, Scandinavia

Stretching across the expansive blue waters of the Sound, the Øresund Bridge is the longest combined road and railway bridge in Europe. It connects the Danish island of Amager with Malmö in Sweden and extends for almost five miles before reaching Peberholm, a small artificial island situated between the two countries. Despite being man-made, the island has developed into an area rich in natural vegetation, with Lund’s Botanical Association recording more than 500 plant species growing there.

Dengjiayao Bridge, China

The intricate crisscrossing design of Dengjiayao Bridge creates an unusual and visually striking route through Beijing’s Tongzhou district. Tongzhou is a historic area that dates back to 195 BC, and its name translates roughly as “the place for passing through.” The bridge’s unusual structure adds an artistic element to what would otherwise be an ordinary journey through the district.

Golden Bridge, Vietnam

Located in Bà Nà Hills near Da Nang, the Golden Bridge is an imaginative pedestrian structure linking a cable-car station with the gardens below. Constructed using fibreglass and wire mesh, the bridge is supported visually by enormous stone-like hands that appear to lift the walkway into the air.

Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway

Known locally as Atlanterhavsveien, the Atlantic Ocean Road links several of Norway’s smaller islands and archipelagos along the country’s western coast. More than a conventional bridge, it is a winding combination of roadway and bridge structures that rises, falls, curves, and bends with the surrounding terrain.

The route provides impressive views across the Norwegian Sea, with distant coastal settlements visible along the horizon. Its unusual design allows the road to blend dramatically into the rugged landscape.

Rakotzbrücke, Germany

Often surrounded by legends and folklore, so-called devil’s bridges are unusual structures found primarily throughout Europe. Their dramatic and seemingly impossible construction has inspired stories suggesting that only the devil himself could have created them.

Rakotzbrücke, located near Görlitz in eastern Germany, is one of these remarkable bridges. Its jagged stone arch is reflected in the surrounding water, creating the appearance of an almost perfect circular shape.

Rainbow Bridge, China

Located in the coastal city of Qingdao, a city famous for its towering skyscrapers overlooking the Yellow Sea, the Rainbow Bridge introduces a bright and playful element to the urban landscape. Its colorful design creates a cheerful visual experience for pedestrians crossing between its sides.

Storseisundet Bridge, Norway

Storseisundet is the longest of the eight bridges that form Norway’s Atlantic Road and was also one of the most difficult structures in the route to construct. Severe weather conditions repeatedly disrupted the building process, with 12 hurricanes reportedly interfering with construction.

Today, the bridge is famous for its dramatic curves and twisting appearance. Drivers traveling from the Romsdal peninsula toward the ocean-facing island of Averøya experience a striking journey as the road bends and rises against the surrounding coastal scenery.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, USA

Extending far into the middle of Lake Pontchartrain, this parallel bridge structure stretches for approximately 23 miles, making it the world’s longest continuous bridge over water. The causeway connects Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans, with the city of Mandeville.

Its extraordinary length makes it an important transportation route and a notable feature for anyone traveling through southeastern Louisiana.

Arch Bridge, China

This elegant arched bridge connects two islands covered in forest and appears to hover above the turquoise waters below. It is located in the Lin’an district of Zhejiang province in eastern China, where the surrounding greenery and clear water create a particularly scenic setting.

Bixby Creek Bridge, USA

Bixby Creek Bridge is a well-known landmark along California’s Big Sur coastline and is a popular stop for people taking road trips through the region. The bridge became even more recognizable after appearing in the opening credits of the 2017 television series Big Little Lies.

The structure rises approximately 280 feet above a peaceful creek that winds toward the Pacific Ocean, combining dramatic coastal scenery with distinctive architecture.

Brooklyn Bridge, USA

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of New York City’s most recognizable landmarks and has appeared countless times in films and television programs, including Sex and the City, Spider-Man, and I Am Legend.

Crossing the East River, the bridge connects Brooklyn with Manhattan and has become an enduring symbol of New York City. Its historical importance is also reflected in its designation as a National Historic Landmark.

Dubai Water Canal Bridge, United Arab Emirates

The Dubai Water Canal Bridge is one of three pedestrian bridges crossing the Dubai Water Canal. Its unusual twisting form was intentionally designed to suggest movement as pedestrians travel from one side of the canal to the other.

The flowing shape gives the structure a dynamic appearance and distinguishes it from more traditional straight or arched bridges.

Golden Gate Bridge, USA

The Golden Gate Bridge is perhaps one of the most recognizable bridges in the world. This San Francisco landmark can look dramatically different depending on the weather, appearing mysterious when surrounded by dense fog or bright and striking beneath clear sunshine.

The bridge has frequently been included among lists of modern wonders and once held the world records for both the longest and tallest suspension bridge.

Landwasser Viaduct, Switzerland

Set among snow-covered pine forests and misty mountain scenery, the Landwasser Viaduct is an elegant curved limestone railway bridge in Graubünden, Switzerland. Trains cross the frozen Landwasser River along the impressive structure, creating a striking combination of engineering and alpine scenery.

Glenfinnan Viaduct, UK

Rising from the rolling hills of Scotland, the Glenfinnan Viaduct stands near the head of Loch Shiel in the western Highlands. Its distinctive curved form became especially famous after appearing in four Harry Potter films, where it served as part of the railway journey leading toward Hogwarts.

Visitors can experience the landscape and the viaduct firsthand by taking the Jacobite steam train between Fort William and Mallaig.

Hussaini Hanging Bridge, Pakistan

Often described as one of the world’s most dangerous bridges, the Hussaini Hanging Bridge is an extremely narrow and unstable-looking structure. It is also quite old and has lost many of the wooden planks that once formed its walkway.

Suspended above the cold waters of Borith Lake in Pakistan’s Hunza Valley, the bridge provides dramatic panoramic views of the rugged mountains surrounding it. Its precarious appearance and spectacular setting have made it a memorable landmark for visitors to the region.

An Overview of Beetles: Nature’s Diverse Insects

Beetles are a remarkably varied group of insects found in nearly every corner of the globe. With over 300,000 species worldwide—and 12,000 in the United States alone—these creatures have adapted to live on land and in freshwater. Most beetles live for about one year and are characterized by having two sets of wings. Because they possess limited vision, they rely on sound, vibrations, or chemical signals called pheromones to communicate with one another.
