Bridges have fascinated me for many years. Whether they stretch across powerful rivers, connect areas divided by deep valleys, or overcome natural barriers that once separated communities, bridges are much more than simple transportation routes.

Growing up in Brooklyn, a large part of western Long Island, I often relied on bridges as the main way to reach other places. Over time, I came to appreciate not only their impressive engineering and beauty but also the destinations and experiences they make possible. Here are five bridges that have left the strongest impressions on me.

Tower Bridge (London, United Kingdom)

Unlike the nearby and practical London Bridge, Tower Bridge feels like something from a storybook. With its elegant Gothic appearance and castle-like towers, it represents the charm and sophistication of the Victorian era, even though it was completed in 1894.

Stretching across the River Thames, this world-famous landmark provides incredible views of some of London’s most recognizable sights. Its elevated walkways, dramatic architecture, and distinctive design have made it a favorite backdrop for major celebrations, including New Year’s Eve events and the 2012 Olympic Games.

For me, Tower Bridge has always been more than a simple crossing between Southwark and the Tower of London. It is a place worth stopping for, admiring, and appreciating. Once criticized by some as an unusual design, it has become one of the most beautiful and memorable bridges anywhere in the world.

Chain Bridge (Budapest, Hungary)

As the Danube River flows through Budapest, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge stands proudly at the center of the city. This romantic and historic bridge is one of Hungary’s most recognizable symbols and offers breathtaking views from both sides of the river.

One of the details that makes the bridge special is the pair of enormous stone lions that guard its entrances. From the bridge, visitors can admire the impressive Hungarian Parliament Building on the Pest side and the magnificent Buda Castle rising above the river on the opposite bank. Its elegant arches and distinctive towers create a graceful silhouette that defines the city skyline.

Completed in 1849, the Chain Bridge was the first permanent crossing over the Danube in Budapest. Although it suffered severe damage during World War II, it was rebuilt and continues to represent the strength, history, and beauty of the Hungarian capital.

Brooklyn Bridge (New York, New York)

The Brooklyn Bridge was the first bridge I ever crossed, traveling from Brooklyn to Manhattan as a child to visit my grandparents. However, my personal memories are only part of the reason this bridge remains one of my favorites. Its beauty speaks for itself.

Since opening in 1883, the bridge has become one of New York City’s greatest icons. Its two massive neo-Gothic stone arches, carefully arranged steel cables, and spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline make every walk across it unforgettable.

Standing on the bridge, you can experience the energy of one of the world’s busiest cities below, watch traffic rushing through the streets, and enjoy the glowing lights that appear after sunset. Its fascinating history adds even more character, from the challenges faced during construction to the famous elephant crossing that proved its strength, as well as the countless movies, photographs, and marriage proposals that have taken place there.

Although it is no longer the world’s longest suspension bridge or tallest structure, the Brooklyn Bridge remains one of the most impressive and beloved landmarks in the world.

Triple Bridge (Ljubljana, Slovenia)

When it comes to elegance, creativity, and clever design, few bridges compare to Ljubljana’s Triple Bridge. Located over the Ljubljanica River in Slovenia’s capital, this unique structure combines beauty with practical urban planning.

The original bridge was built in 1842, but as traffic increased after World War I, it could no longer handle the growing demands of the city. In 1932, architect Jože Plečnik transformed it by adding two pedestrian bridges on either side of the original structure.

Rather than placing the additional bridges in a simple parallel arrangement, Plečnik positioned them at slight angles, creating a graceful fan-like design. The addition of stairways leading toward the river terrace and rows of decorative stone posts gives the bridge a special artistic quality.

Today, located in a pedestrian-friendly area surrounded by beautiful Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, the Triple Bridge invites visitors to slow down and enjoy its atmosphere rather than simply cross from one side to the other.

Forth Bridge (South Queensferry, Scotland)

The Forth Bridge is a remarkable achievement of engineering and one of Scotland’s most important landmarks. Completed in 1890 after eight years of construction, this enormous railway bridge made history with its extraordinary cantilever design and held the record for the world’s longest cantilever bridge span for nearly three decades.

Stretching almost 8,300 feet across the Firth of Forth, the bridge has become a symbol of Scottish innovation and strength. It is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has even appeared on British banknotes.

On a clear day, the bridge’s famous red steel structure stands out brilliantly against the landscape, while its stone towers add a sense of elegance to the powerful industrial design. Carrying both passenger and freight trains, it remains a vital part of Scotland’s transportation network.

While enjoying a meal nearby at The Hawes Inn, almost directly beneath the bridge, the sound of trains passing overhead provides a reminder of the incredible strength behind this structure. Built with around 55,000 tons of steel, the Forth Bridge is designed to endure for generations to come.

The Americano Coffee Is an Ode to Simplicity

The Americano Coffee Is an Ode to Simplicity

It’s difficult to say exactly when the Americano became my preferred espresso-based drink. Perhaps it’s because it usually costs less than a latte while still offering a larger serving size than drinks like a cortado. Or maybe it’s simply because it shares its name with the Americano cocktail, one of my personal favorites.
