Europe is home to a variety of stunning destinations where flowers bloom throughout the year. If you're eager to experience the beauty of flowers, some places start showing blooms as early as March, depending on the location. While autumn colors are breathtaking, there’s something truly magical about a field of flowers. Here are six of my favorite places to see flowers in Europe, each offering a unique experience from March to August.

March: Crocuses • Alps of Switzerland

When the snow begins to melt, the Swiss Alps emerge as one of the best places to witness flowers in bloom. The crocuses—delicate purple and white blooms—can be seen pushing through the remaining snow. Though I haven’t yet experienced this in Switzerland, I’ve observed it in Italy’s Dolomites during June, thanks to the late snowmelt. If you time your visit right, you may catch these flowers beginning to bloom as early as late March. I find these little flowers to be the "harbingers of spring."

April: Tulips • The Netherlands

The Netherlands is famous for its colorful tulip fields, and many travelers flock to this destination each spring. Keukenhof Gardens is a top spot to enjoy these vibrant flowers. There’s something about the sea of colors that draws people in—perhaps it's the symbolism of spring and warmer weather. However, I must point out that tulips originally came from Central Asia and were first cultivated by the Turks around 3,000 years ago! The Netherlands may be the modern hub for tulips, but it all started in Turkey.
Bonus destination for April
Gorse bushes • Ireland
Gorse bushes bloom abundantly throughout the year, but in April, they are especially vibrant. If you love the color yellow, Ireland in April is a must-visit. The gorse flowers brighten up the Irish landscape, adding a cheerful touch to the scenery.

May: Poppies • Tuscany, Italy

I visited Tuscany in May during my first trip to Italy and saw the stunning sight of poppies blooming in the fields. While they start appearing as early as mid-April, it’s typically in May when the fields are covered in a sea of red poppies. The rolling hills of Tuscany and Umbria offer some of the best views for poppy spotting, and renting a car gives you the freedom to stop for photographs whenever you like. Tuscany is also famous for its sunflowers in August, so it’s a great place to visit year-round.

June: Lavender • Provence, France

Provence in France is renowned for its vast lavender fields that bloom in mid-June to early July. These purple flowers not only fill the landscape with color but are also used in perfumes and cosmetics. Although I haven’t visited Provence yet, this experience is high on my travel list. Lavender fields are a stunning sight, and it’s one of my favorite floral scents. Climate change may affect these fields, so let’s hope we can preserve them for years to come.

July: Wildflowers • Alpe di Siusi, Italy

Alpe di Siusi, in Italy, is one of the most vibrant places to see wildflowers. By early July, this high-altitude meadow is blanketed with colorful wildflowers, making it one of the most picturesque places I’ve visited. The landscape is full of color, and the sight of flowers stretching across the meadow is simply breathtaking. I remember a story from my trip in 2019 when I saw a dog rolling happily in the wildflowers, and I couldn’t help but wish I could do the same. The beauty of this place is unmatched, and it’s definitely worth a visit in the summer.

August: Heather • Scotland

Scotland offers another incredible floral experience, especially in August when the heather is in full bloom. The hillsides of Cairngorms National Park are covered in heather, creating a stunning landscape. Whether the weather is sunny or cloudy, the sight of the purple and lavender blooms is awe-inspiring. I visited the Glenshee area in August 2024 and had a lovely conversation with a fellow traveler about how amazing Scotland is—especially with the blooming heather. The heather-covered hillsides make Scotland one of the most beautiful places to visit in August.

Beetles are a remarkably varied group of insects found in nearly every corner of the globe. With over 300,000 species worldwide—and 12,000 in the United States alone—these creatures have adapted to live on land and in freshwater. Most beetles live for about one year and are characterized by having two sets of wings. Because they possess limited vision, they rely on sound, vibrations, or chemical signals called pheromones to communicate with one another.
